Ed Evans, a retired Hilton High School science teacher, has been working since the summer of 2008 uncovering the former site of a 1935 Civilian Conservation Corps Camp that just happens to be on Hamlin Beach State Park property. The CCC camp was converted to a German Prisoner of War camp in 1944 that was not dismantled until sometime after 1946.
Surprisingly, the two camps left imprints on the site, decorated with artifacts of all kinds that 70 years of runaway plant growth and erosion couldn’t destroy. Ed and his band of volunteers have turned the site into a park-like setting and give history tours upon request.
